Calcium is well known for its importance in maintaining healthy bones. Vitamin D is also well known for enhancing the absorption of calcium. However, as important as vitamin D and calcium are, L-lysine is just as important!
L-lysine is an essential amino acid that aids in the formation and maintenance of muscle, bone, and other tissues. The body does not manufacture L-lysine so it must be obtained through diet and supplementation. L-lysine is abundant in dairy products, wheat germ, brewer’s yeast, fish and meats.
L-lysine first became popular with athletes who used the amino acid supplement because it is a key building block of muscle tissue and supports lean mass building and the overall health of muscle and bone.
For the rest of us non-athletes, L-lysine is still very important. Our bodies are constantly rebuilding themselves, repairing muscles, building bone and maintaining tissues. L-lysine helps in these processes in addition to helping our bodies absorb and use calcium. It potentially reduces the body’s excretion of calcium, which is important for supporting bone health as we age.
Next time you pick up a bottle of calcium, think about adding a bottle of L-lysine to enhance the absorption of your calcium. L-lysine is available from your local health store or click here to purchase from Physician’s Preference.
