Don’t “Forget” Your ALC!

Acetyl L-carnitine is an amino acid synthesized in the liver and kidneys and is transported for use to other tissues in the body. Within the body, it is found in the greatest concentrations in tissues that use fatty acids as their main dietary fuel, such as the skeletal and cardiac muscles. Acetyl L-carnitine is considered superior to L-carnitine because it is absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, enters cells and crosses the blood brain barrier more readily.

Researchers are excited about the use of Acetyl L-carnitine for people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Some suggest it may even enhance your ability to think clearer and remember things like, ‘where did I set down my keys:’

“Certain nutrients have also undergone examination for their role in promoting brain health in older adults. One of the most extensively researched nutrients for its role in promoting brain wellness is Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALCAR). ALCAR has demonstrated marked positive effects on brain aging, both from a preventive and therapeutic standpoint.” (From Anti Aging Resource)

According to Mind Boosters author Dr. Sahelia, Alzheimer’s patients may benefit from acetyl l-carnitine in three ways 1. First, acetyl l-carnitine is able to travel through the blood brain barrier, where it helps form a brain chemical called acetylcholine. Second, acetyl l-carnitine keeps mitochondria working efficiently by clearing them of toxic fatty acid metabolites and third, it helps regenerate neurons damaged by free radicals.

There are several studies backing up Dr. Sahelia’s theories. One such study examined autopsies, which showed that people who had Alzheimer’s experienced 25 to 40 percent less acetyl l-carnitine transference activity than people without Alzheimer’s. There are also studies underway that are looking into Acetyl L-carnitine and its “cardioprotective” abilities:

“Supplemental acetyl-L-carnitine may have neuroprotective activity. In addition, it, like L-carnitine, may have cardioprotective activity and may beneficially affect cardiac function. It may enhance sperm motiliy. Acetyl-L-carnitine may also have cytoprotective, antioxidant and anti-apoptotic activity.” (From Health and Supplements)

If you are concerned about developing age related dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, acetyl l-carnitine could help delay the onset. Talk to your physician about taking an acetyl l-carnitine supplement. Acetyl L-carnitine is available from your local health store or click here to purchase from Physician’s Preference.
