While the benefits of magnesium are myriad, like all supplements, there can be “too much” of a good thing. When on magnesium supplements, be careful not to exceed the recommended daily dose of 300-400mg per day, unless advised by a physician. Remember that magnesium may be present in some prescription medications and multiple vitamins so read your labels carefully.
It is possible to get a substantial level of magnesium simply you’re your diet. Magnesium is found in almonds, brazil nuts, wheat bran, seeds, seafood, legumes and dark green vegetables, and even a few lesser known treats:

Being aware of foods containing magnesium can help you monitor your magnesium intake.
An overdose of magnesium is unlikely to be life threatening. However, if someone takes a much larger dose than prescribed or recommended on the label, call emergency medical services, your doctor or the nearest poison control center right away.
Common side effects from high levels or overdoses of magnesium include:
- Dry skin
- Depression
- Fatigue
- Diarrhea
- Joint / Spinal deterioration
- Dehydration
- Muscle spasms
- Cramps
