Feeling Moody?

If you are like many women, you may be prone to mood swings associated with your hormones. Did you know that ginkgo biloba could have a positive impact on regulating your mood?

The ginkgo tree is the oldest living tree species, growing on earth for 150-200 million years. Due to its longevity and use in Chinese and European medicine, it is considered one of the most well researched herbs in the world.

Ginkgo biloba’s mechanism of action is increasing the blood flow to the brain and throughout the body’s network of blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the organ systems. When studying gingko biloba’s affect on memory, researchers stumbled upon its effectiveness in influencing mood.

One such trial examined the effects of gingko biloba on healthy older adults who had just completed a four-month study of gingko biloba extract at 120mg per day1. Study participants had either taken gingko biloba or placebo for the previous four months and could choose whether to take placebo or ginkgo for the next six months. At the conclusion of the study, researchers found significant improvements for mood and alertness between the ginkgo and placebo groups. The improvements were far greater for those who had taken gingko biloba for 10 months compared to those who took it for four or six months.

At this point in time, Ginkgo biloba is used to effectively treat a variety of conditions in people of all ages:

“Ginkgo Biloba is Used for:

  • Insufficient blood flow to the brain.
  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Depression
  • Impotence
  • Inner ear problems
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Neuralgia
  • Outer vascular insufficiency” (From Alternative Medicine)

If you suffer from moodiness and are looking for a natural way to help, consider a gingko biloba supplement. In some cases, it has proved effective where prescription medications have failed:

“Studies are beginning to show that Ginkgo can be used to treat some forms of depression that are not responsive to antidepressant agents. In cases of resistant depression, Ginkgo Biloba is beginning to appear attractive to the medical world.” (From Articles on Self-Help and Positive Thinking)
