The Vioxx scare of last year has caused many individuals to seek natural alternatives to prescription or over the counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID). The many health concerns associated with NSAIDs are considered too risky for many suffering in pain. Increasingly, people with joint pain or arthritis are turning to MSM to help them with their ailments. MSM is a sulfur compound plentiful in fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, milk and some grains. However, the MSM is destroyed when foods are processed. That is why MSM supplements are a preferred format for obtaining MSM.Doctors who suggest MSM for their patients caution that it is not a miracle cure. However, as long as patients are taking the supplement, MSM does have wonderful pain relieving and anti-inflammatory properties without the dangerous side effects of NSAIDs.
Dr. Jacob of the Oregon Health Sciences University conducted a clinical study to compare MSM to NSAIDs for arthritis patients1. In this small study, 12 women with arthritis were randomly assigned to take a moderate dosage of 600mg of Ibuprofen three times daily. Another 12 women took six grams of MSM daily. After one month of usage, the participants from both groups reported similar degrees of pain reduction and inflammation improvement. The MSM users reported no side effects, while the NSAID group had three participants experiencing moderate hyperacidity discomfort. Typically, people will notice improvement within three to four weeks of MSM usage.
If you suffer from muscle, joint or arthritic pain, talk to your doctor about how MSM could be a natural alternative to NSAIDs.
