Green Tea

Centuries of Users Couldn’t Be Wrong

According to the legend regarding green tea, in 2700 B.C. a Chinese emperor, Shen Nung sat under a tea shrub and a few leaves fell into his cup of hot water.  And…green tea was born!  Other historians tell the tale of a man known as Shien Non Shei who found the plant, and tasted a leaf from it.  He thought it tasted fantastic and decided to mix it with water to make a drink out of it.  He believed the plant had medicinal properties!

People in China have been drinking green tea as a healthy medicinal beverage for over 4,000 years.  However, in the Western world, it is only in the last few years that there has been a lot of attention focused on green teas’ health benefits.

With thousands of years of use, the antioxidant properties of green tea have been demonstrated repeatedly.  In fact, Chinese seamen in the 1400s avoided scurvy due to the amount of vitamin C in the green tea.  The Chinese have used green tea to treat everything from headaches to depression!

Today, through scientific research, we know that green tea is associated with a long list of health benefits.  Here’s just a few:

  • Reducing the risk of esophageal cancer
  • Inhibiting the growth of cancer cells
  • Lowering total cholesterol levels
  • Improving the ratio of good cholesterol to bad cholesterol
  • Treating rheumatoid arthritis
  • Helping to fight infection
  • Assisting impaired immune function
  • Speeding up metabolism

If you find it difficult to consume green tea in beverage form, consider taking a green tea supplement on a daily basis.  Green tea supplements are available from your local health store, or click here to purchase from Physician’s Preference and save 10-20%!
